A Reason to Run

Our church put on an amazing event this year, the inaugural A Reason to Run 5K.  I know it was a lot of work for the folks who organized it, but their hard work really paid off, as it was a fabulous race.  The wonderful sense of community and the multi-generational participants is exactly what our church is hoping to move towards with family ministry.  There were kids playing, volunteers helping, folks seriously running and lots of people just out to have a good time and get a little exercise.  I was somewhere in between...it's no secret that I'm not one who loves to exercise and I certainly don't like to run.  I've tried it a few times and I always feel like my lungs are going to explode, so I stop.  I don't usually get very far.  But I'm happy to say that I did run a bit during the race, while pushing Kennedy in the stroller and trying to prod Carter to keep up.  Between bathroom breaks (Carter), stroller changes (both Kennedy and Carter) we completed the race in ~42 minutes.  And it was really fun.  I loved it!  So much so that I am committed to actually training for it next year and running the entire thing.
And not to forget my super athletic hubby, he ran the whole thing and came in 5th or 6th place in his age division.  And he said he could have ran faster but having never run a 5K didn't know what to expect.
Our friends, the Grices, were incredible ~ both runners, they were making there way to the finish as I was passing the one mile marker.  Zack won the whole thing and I think Rachel finished forth or fifth overall.  I was impressed!
Kyle complimented me and said at least I looked the part.
We were ready to run!

Kennedy was a happy participant, too.
There was a kids fun run after the race, but we had to rush off and get Carter to his baseball game.  Hopefully we can do that next year, I'm sure the kids would have really enjoyed it.

A family photo before the race

Kennedy and I finishing strong!
I was super impressed that Carter kept up most of the way, of course there was a bit of complaining and whining but he ran and walked and completed the race with me.  It was so fun to do it with the kids.

It was a beautiful day and such a great way to spend time as a family and enjoy our church family, too.
This event supported our church's many missions, which was an added bonus.  I am so proud of the team that worked so hard to get this race off the ground.  It really was wonderfully done!  Looking forward to next year!

Cinco de Mayo

My goal was to be caught up on our blog before summer officially started...I'm getting there, slowly, but I am making progress.  At least I've moved into May!

One of our regularly scheduled small group gatherings happened to fall on Cinco de Mayo, so we decided a little party was in order.  The weather cooperated and we had such a fun evening; delicious food, yummy margaritas, laughing children (14 of them!) and wonderful friends to share great conversations.  It was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon!
The ladies
(Rachel arrived a little late so we missed her in this one)
I am so very grateful for this group of women who I am lucky enough to call friends.  They offer such support and love...and they are really fun.

The guys manned the troops out front while the ladies were able to catch up properly.  I love that Kyle has really connected with these men in our group.  They often get together on their own and are a great support for one another.

It was so warm that the sprinkler was pulled out and the kids ran around and squealed with delight!

These boys are so cute!
We are lucky to have four first grade boys in our group and they get along really well.  I am also so thankful for these relationships that Carter is starting to develop ~ a great group of 14 special kids!

a trip to the tulip fields

The photographer that we've used in the past for family pictures was offering mini spring sessions at the tulip fields and I just couldn't pass up the opportunity.  I've always wanted to go and explore the beautiful fields bursting with colors but I've been hard pressed to get Kyle on board for an hour drive to go look at flowers.  We ended up going on a week day (when there were no crowds but also no fun activities) when Kyle was at work.
It was such a lovely setting and I was thrilled with how the pictures turned out.  Carter is usually my photogenic one, but we had trouble getting a natrual smile from him.  Kennedy was a bit more cooperative, there was the promise of ice cream, after all.
I'm amazed at how big they're getting...

I brought along my own camera and compared to Marie's stunning photography, mine look a little sad...but I had to include a few.

My handsome, nearly 7 year old, boy!
Love him

We found some wooden shoes and a windmill ~ very Holland-esque

oh how I love this little one and her too cute for words smile, the one that crinkles her nose!

The kids wanted to take a few pictures, too.

Happy Birthday Carter-Man

A birthday celebration seems to last a week or so in our house and this year was no exception.  By the time we got to Carter's actual birthday, he was on his third celebration!  It was nice that his birthday fell on a Sunday this year...with his crazy party behind us, we were able to enjoy a fun, special, much more relaxed day celebrating everything great about Carter.
A special tradition is to get breakfast in bed on your birthday.  It's a pretty big deal and Carter was so excited.  He chose to have french toast and fruit (he doesn't normally drink from a lidded cup, but I thought this was a much safer way to enjoy his OJ).

such anticipation...anxiously awaiting the delivery of his breakfast.

and that is a sincere hug of thanks.  I know Carter felt special and loved, which is what a birthday is all about!

a quick picture before we headed off to church
I really can't believe my boy is 7.  7!  However did that happen?
We joke that soon he'll be as tall as I am...we joke, but really, I wonder?  He's gaining ground quickly, too quickly for my liking.

Since we were having family over for dinner to continue his birthday celebration, Carter got to choose the restaurant for his birthday lunch.  He loves sushi and had wanted to go to Mio, but we found it is closed on Sundays.  So, we decided to be adventurous and tried Sushi Land.  Well, what a treat that turned out to be... I thought the sushi was mediocre at best, but the kids loved the idea of food coming around on the conveyor belt.  It was fun to sample lots of different rolls and Carter quite possibly ate his weight in sushi!  He was thrilled!

Off to Baskin & Robbins for a quick ice cream cone
Another way Carter is like me - he always chooses fruit type flavors over chocolate.  This time was grape and apple sherbet with some candy pieces.  He loved it.

Auntie Val, Mark and Brady, Grandma & Papa and Aunt Peg came over to help celebrate.
Carter chose the menu, so we had a great dinner of ribs, salad, fruit and rolls.
The kids played and had fun with Brady and we just enjoyed a relaxed afternoon with family.
Carter was thrilled with his new wedge, golf balls and glove.
The pom poms were a hit while Carter was opening presents!

a future cheer leader perhaps?
I love this picture of Carter...it's just so him
He's happiest with a ball in his hands, being active.  I also love how it shows off some of his missing teeth.  This past year, the sixth year, of his life will be filled with pictures of his smile in varying states.

There are so many wonderful things that I love about Carter.  He is funny and smart, he is always up for learning something new and asks great questions and has a lot to add to conversation.  He has done wonderfully in school this year, his favorite subject is math and he's managed to teach himself a bit of multiplication and division.  He has really worked hard and is a fantastic reader.  He loves stories and has finished the first five books in the Harry Potter series, his favorite.  He's recently developed a liking for the Lemony Snicket and A to Z Mystery series.  He also likes to read for knowledge ~ our last trip to the library had us searching for books on a few of our past presidents.  He chose three to research further, JFK, Nixon and Grover Cleavland.  He's usually very excited to share any new information he's learned.  He is confident, sometimes a bit too confident and we've had to work on not boasting.  There's a fine line between being confident and being a bragger and we're trying hard to make sure that he knows the difference.  He has chosen great friends, and I'm so proud of him for that, as that's important in life.  Carter loves going to church and has wonderful buddies there.  He never forgets to read his devotional each evening and truly has a heart for God.  He's sensitive and sweet and still sometimes struggles with expressing his emotions appropriately.  He's passionate and stubborn and always right, trust me he'll tell you too.  Man, can that boy argue.  It can be exhausting.  Carter loves sports, all sports.  He's most happy when he's outside, preferably with a ball in his hand.  He loves football and baseball and basketball but also enjoys playing soccer, golf and has developed an interest in tennis, as well.  This year he took swimming lessons in the summer, played his third year of soccer in the fall, had a great first season of basketball in the winter and is enjoying an awesome season of baseball this spring.  He also fell in love with skiing and participated in a four week ski program this winter.  He's active and healthy and really loves to be outdoors.  Yet another trait that I love about Carter is that he's not so "boyish" that he can't enjoy other things.  While he loves sports, he also has fun doing art projects with his sister, snuggling with his mama watching HGTV (House Hunters and Love It or List It are his two favorites) on a Saturday night and helping me cook or bake.  He's sensitive and loving and sweet...a very well rounded little man.
He's certainly not perfect, our boy.  These past few months we've had some behavior problems that we're working really hard to correct.  He is impatient and intolerant and can argue a blue streak (even with his teacher!).  He struggles with impulse control a bit and can be so goofy and silly, even when it's not appropriate.  It's been hard for me to witness some of these transformations, as I know what a sweet boy he can be.  He's a love in so many ways and I just pray that he will have a kind and gentle heart, thinking of others before himself.  It's a tall order for a seven year old, I know, but I am confident he'll find his way.  He has so much to offer this world and I am excited to see where God will take him.
I feel so blessed to have Carter as my son...seven years ago, God made me a mama by entrusting me with this precious boy.  I experienced a love that is unlike any other.  A mother's love is unconditional and I will love you forever, Carter, no matter what.
Carter snapped this picture during dinner and I thought it was so cute.  Brady's eye's just sparkle!
He's such a sweet little guy.

What would a party be without a small fire to ignite some excitement?  After bbq-ing our delicious dinner, Kyle left the BBQ on high to burn off the sauce and clean the grill a bit.  Unfortunately, he forgot that it was on and just after dinner, Mark noticed flames shooting up.  Thankfully Kyle didn't panic and quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher from the boat (at the time, our only extinguisher in the house ~ now we have two others more conveniently located!  Nothing like a close call to promote fire safety) and put out the fire.  Quite an exciting way to end the day!

Grandma and the boys
A great way to end a fun weekend of celebrating a very special boy!
Happy 7th Birthday, Carter.  We love you more than words could ever say!

Carter's 7th Birthday ~ Go Ducks!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARTER!
GO DUCKS!!!
Carter chose to have an Oregon Duck themed football party this year and I actually found it to be really simple and a lot of fun to put together.  He wanted to play football with his friends, so we didn't do much at the house...lunch and a lot of treats and then flag football at his school.  Unfortunately the weather was not great (at one point it was raining and blowing so hard that it looked like it was raining side ways!), so the boys had to play their game under cover.  Some of the boys were really into playing but a lot weren't.  While it's easy to look at these pictures and think that the party was perfectly successful, I'd like to be very honest and say that it was anything but!  Having 11 little boys in our house was just too many...it was chaos at it's best.  And I'm not proud to say that I didn't handle it very well.  I am one who likes order and control and there was very little of that!!!  Thankfully I have wonderful friends who stepped in and helped corral the chaos and keep things moving along.  While they were eating, the boys were great, but otherwise there was a lot of loudness and running crazy.  This will definitely be the last party that we do at home ~ little boys need to be able to run and be active in an appropriate setting.  With all that being said, Carter really did have a great time and he was happy with his party and that is what matters most.

We were able to borrow a few things from friends to help decorate and I love how it all came together.
Kyle made the goal post out of PVC pipe and then covered it with yellow duct tape.  It looked awesome!
Our normal cake lady wasn't available to do a cake this year, so I made two types of cupcakes and Kathy helped me frost them, so they looked great!

Carter's most favorite article of clothing is his D'Anthony Thomas jersey, and he was beyond thrilled to be able to wear it to his party.  I found green water bottles at the dollar store and with a little ribbon they made cute party favors.

We decorated the table in the entry way and passed out Gatorade to the boys for their football game.

The table turned out great!  My amazing husband did such a fantastic job with it.  He found green, outdoor carpet that looked like turf to cover the long table, and he used different colors of duct tape to make it look like a football field.  It was exactly as I hoped it would be.  Carter really loved it, too.  This year more than any other, he was excited and grateful for the decorations.

We brought our desk down from upstairs and used it for the food table.  We just grilled up hot dogs, served bags of chips and some fruit and called it good.  I really did try to keep things simple this year.

Found these cute football lollipops at Oriental Trading Company

Chocolate football cupcakes and snickerdoodle with cinnamon buttercream ~  I was really happy with the way the cake stands turned out too.

Lauren was invited so that Kennedy would have someone to play with, too.  They were so sweet and just played quietly on their own.  Such a huge difference between boys and girls!

Kathy and Shannon graciously helped me decorate the sugar cookies that I passed out for favors. We made green and yellow Duck helmets, polka dot "C"s and then chocolate footballs.  I feel so fortunate to have sweet friends who are willing to share their talents.  In just a couple of hours, we had three dozen cookies ready for the party ~ amazing!

Carter playing quarterback

(thanks Zack for taking pictures!)

Kyle, bless his heart, was at the school with the boys (along with a couple of other dads), while I was getting everything ready back at the house.
He is such a great dad!!!

Lunch time
And a few pictures of Carter's friends

Carter and Andrew
These two boys are really so fun to watch together.  They have a lot of similar interests and remain the best of friends.

Andrew Z. ~ such a cutie!

Samuel and Ben

And here's the whole gang
Carter's only other request besides the football game was a pinata.  Again, the weather was not optimal for being outside, but it wasn't raining, and the boys didn't seem to mind too much.

Taking a good whack at it!
I think everyone got the chance to hit it at least once this year

Present time
No matter how many times I asked the boys to move back a little, they just moved in closer and closer as Carter was opening up his gifts.  Carter handled it fairly well and got through it quickly.  He got lots of nice things and loved playing with all of his new toys once the party was over.

Lastly, we served cupcakes and ice cream
I love this picture of Carter as it really does show the joy and happiness of the afternoon.  He loves being with his friends and enjoyed his party.  This type of smile makes all the craziness worth it!
I'd do anything to see that smile light up his face and know that joy is authentic!
Happy birthday, Carter-Man!
